Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Unbranched or sparingly branched shrubs 1.5–6 m tall, with tan latex.

Stems: Stems subherbaceous, woody only at base, unbranched or sparingly branched from base, pubescent.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades elliptic, oblanceolate, obovate, or oblong, blades 10–37 cm long, 2–13 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Base attenuate to obtuse. Upper surfaces green, glabrous or sparsely pubescent; lower surfaces whitish green, pubescent at least on the midrib and veins. Margins minutely callose–denticulate to callose–serrulate. Petioles 1–8 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences 5–16–flowered, peduncles 5–40 mm long, pedicels 3–15 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect); hypanthium obovoid to obconical, 4–11 mm long, 4–8 mm wide, pubescent. Calyx lobes narrowly triangular, 1–5 mm long, 0.5–2 mm wide, apex acuminate or acute. Corolla white to pale purplish with purple longitudinal stripes, 20–48 mm long, 3–5 mm wide, subglabrous to densely pubescent, the tube suberect or curved, the lobes spreading, ⅓–1⁄2 as long as the tube. Stamens 5, alternate with corolla lobes, connate; staminal column glabrous or pubescent at base; anthers minutely papillose, sometimes sparsely pubescent, the lower 2 with apical tufts of white hairs. Ovary inferior, 2-celled; ovule placentation axile; stigma 2-lobed, wet or dry, appressed and nonreceptive as the style grows through the anther tube, pushing out the pollen, after which the stigmas spread apart and become receptive.

Fruit: Berries yellow to orange; globose; ellipsoid; or obovoid; 10–20 mm long; 6–10 mm wide. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 28*

Habitat: Occurring in diverse mesic forest.

Elevation Range: 200–1,520 m.
